Can anyone compare these two towns? Which one do you think is a better place to raise kids and why? We like Santa Cruz because it is liberal and has great air quality, but the schools leave much to be desired. Also, there is a major homeless problem as well as increasing gang activity so we are considering other areas. Thanks in advance.

Ventura is definitely a family town in many respects. Not as pricey as Santa Cruz. You give very little to go on, however. I'd imagine there's more to your consideration than finding a good place to raise kids. What about work? Budget? Long-range plans?

DH can work from home. We'd have a $500K housing budget. Long range plans are to raise happy, healthy kids in a safe environment with good air quality and excellent schools.

Have you thought about Monterey? It's a beautiful town that fits what you're looking for. Not sure about the housing costs though.

Ventura! Better surfing and families can make a living there.

Monterey is too cold and foggy for us.

the weather in santa cruz county is similar.
i suppose it may be a bit foggier down there but i'm not sure about that.
and i don't know about the school systems but i certainly wouldn't let fear of gangs and homeless people deter me from living in one of the best counties in the state.

I've been tracking the weather in Monterey vs Santa Cruz every day for about 6 months. It is much cooler and foggier in Monterey.

Do you have kids? I am guessing not because if you did then you would see why gangs and a large homeless population might be deterents.

I'm used to Santa Barbara and San Diego weather. I like the weather down there better than my current digs in Capitola.
Your best schools are probably going to be hard to find in CA though, unless you're going private or homeschooling.

Based on what you wrote, Ventura should work for you. Hollywood Beach School (elementary), which is in the County of Ventura at the Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard, is one of the best schools anywhere. It serves Hollywood Beach, Silverstrand and parts of Port Hueneme.

You should know that the Ventura-Oxnard area also gets fog, though not on the same scale as Monterey. May and June can see many days, even weeks, in a row with no sun. I like that weather, but you mentioned an aversion to it. Just FYI.
