Is California the only state with such a high number of Hispanics? (home, buy)

You can't just walk in and say, "hey, my great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather had a claim on the land and I want it."

Those with "claims" have legal claims that are on the books. If they didn't follow through the proper channels to ensure ownership, then they lost their window of opportunity.

My husband's family has some land that they claimed. They own it - it is theirs. Some land they didn't claim - they lost the right to claim it as theirs.

So yes - the statutes of limitation have passed.

I agree. But if you see a hispanic at Home Depot - don't assume he's looking for work. My brother-in-law was offered "work" while stopping there to pick up supplies for our home project. He said, "no thank you." The offeror looked a bit puzzled about his complete lack of accent.

Give a person the benefit of a doubt until you know better - that's all I'm suggesting.

How about the guys standing around out front, whistling and waving at any car that drives in? Can I assume they're looking for work?

My post was to add a little sarcasm to the picture. Not sure how someone today has any rights to anyones land, just because someone took it from a long distant relative.

By the way I have never been asked if i wanted to take on a little extra work while at Home Depot, but my lovely wife has been thought of as a nanny because our children are so whetto looking and her skin is a little dark. Guess they take after me.

It's strange, I lived for years in NM and never really comprehended racism. I never thought of hispanic being "not white." A little travel sure makes you realize how crazy the world can be when it comes to race and ethnicity.

He thought about using a REALLY exaggerated Cheech and Chong accent, but realized that it wouldn't have made his point as well.

And think about it - if someone comes up to you and offers you work, it is because you have the aire of a hard worker. It's actually a bit flattering. They had his economic and legal status wrong - but not his work ethic.

I think practically every state has its share of Hispanics. I've met several illegals that had settled first in MICHIGAN before migrating to Oregon. And the density probably varies in states, too. Here in Oregon, they're mostly in certain Portland suburbs. LOTS of them. I believe the last stat I read for the town I live in was 19% ~ but that is the census figure for LEGAL immigants. And in parts of Eastern Oregon, as well (farming).

Saw a surprising amount of Mexicans/Central Americans in New York City last fall.

I don't know what's with that Hispanic Origins map shown above but I'm not buying what I see on it.
