I will be moving to Vandenberg this Winter. I am 28 and will want to be near other 20-30 somethings. Looks like Arroyo Grande, Grover Beach, Pismo Beach and SLO are my best options (the boards have talked me out of Santa Maria). I am really torn between the beaches and SLO. I will be looking to rent something 1-2 br for under $1600/month.

I have to commute to contractors currently several times a week that is about 45 minutes one way, so that isn't too big of a concern. Will these drives be similar to the base? (looks like around 40-60 min)

Looks like there are a lot of potential rentals on craig's list that I could work with ...

Thanks.

How about Nipomo? It's just north of Santa Maria. It's about a 45 minute commute from the main gate at V.A.F.B., it's close to the beaches. Knowing what I know about the area, if you like to go to the beach, and will work at V.A.F.B. that's where I'd look.

Many threads here suggest Nipomo isn't as desirable as some of the other areas and at 45 minutes, I might as well hit Arroyo, Grover, Pismo.

I would like to be as close to the most social scene there is for young professionals (which may include more students than professionals).

The more I consider the drive from the north, the more I am leaning towards something closer to base. I am going to look back at south Santa Maria/Orcutt again ... and just look to spend my weekends at Pismo Beach and SLO.

I think that would be a fine choice too!! There are many nice neighborhoods in southern Santa Maria and Orcutt, and the commute would only be 20 minute to the main gate. And also it would be about 30 minutes to Pismo Beach up the 101.

imo, orcutt will be your best option because you will be centrally located between slo (45 minutes north) and santa barbara (1 hour south).

one more thing to consider, by the time u move here in the winter, it will be dark by 5:30pm. if u choose to live in grover beach or pismo or slo, it will be pitch black by the time u get home from work (if u work a regular daytime shift). and like u said, enjoy the beach (during the daylight) on the weekends.
