Hi all,
I'm from UK and am coming to California for three months this September. I wanted to get an idea of how much it would cost to rent an apartment as close as possible to the LA city area (would prefer not to be out in the desert

I only need the most basic (but clean/well maintained) accommodation - a studio or 1 bed appartment with shower/bath and cooking area facility as my budget is very tight. Can anyone tell me what I'd expect to pay per month for this kind of accommodation? This info would help me so when I go I'll have a good idea of what the current rental rates should be.

Actually if anyone has any links or tips of where to rent I'd appreciate that too.

Many thanks!

You might want to look into renting a room in a private home. You will also likely need a car to get around plus insurance. Anything minimally decent is going to be $1500 a month and up and the lower you go on the rent the more dubious the area you would be living in, generally speaking.

Thanks Robe, I'm looking at craigslist at the moment which someone recommended on a different forum - it has lots of sublets/temporary accommodation which is the kind of thing I probably need. I've also decided my budget is no more L$800 a month. So at least I have an idea of what people are charging for studio rentals.

If that is your max for an apartment you better either start learning spanish now or like living with roaches.

You may be able to find an okay room for that price. I'd suggest looking in the San Fernando Valley, it is north of downtown Los Angeles and most of it is within Los Angeles city limits. Most of it is relatively decent, although there are a few bad areas.

You won't need a car if you actually live in Los Angeles, contrary to popular belief there is a pretty extensive public transit system.

1500 is a bit much. I've seen studios and one beds in decent enough areas in and around Long Beach/west OC for 1000.

Where do you want to live though, because downtown LA is mainly business/work areas? People generally don't live there.

Here is a larger apartment company with various prices and details for your reference.

The OP will probably have to get a month-to-month lease if he/she only wants to be there for three months, in which case the rent will probably be more than that.

Thanks everyone for the tips - appreciated!

I'm also hoping to get free board/lodging on one of the WWOOF farms (Willing Workers on Organic Farms) - I don't mind a bit of graft.

user_id, I have experience of the roaches in America, it was downtown Miami in a supposed "good" hotel (according to the Lonely Planet guide book). Wow - that must have been the seediest hotel in Miami - I checked out pretty quick the next day!

I'll check out the San Fernando valley area anyway.

In the SFV there are too many "bad" areas (Tujunga, SunValley, Van Nuys, No. Hollywood, Pacoima, Sylmar, San Fernando. Stick with Glendale/Burbank. Especially Glendale. Small 1-2 bdrm units that can be had for 800-1200 in good areas. Also, the deeper into the SFV you go the more miserable the summers (105-115 F on bad days)
