"Ground Zero" is more correctly defined as the entire United States outside of Texas. The entire country was devasted by 8 years of Republican village idiot ideology, not just the Central Valley of CA. Boy, Newsweek sure has become one of the great low-class publications. Maybe they are outsourcing to make up their stories, utilizing cheap labor while taking a hit in quality.

CA remains a state of enormous natural beauty, great weather, and high quality of life. For every person who leaves because they are forced to, there are many more who would prefer to give this place a shot even though they can live anywhere else in the world. Recovering from those horrific 8 years takes time, but CA is always primed to flourish because of its many positive traits, traits that continue to attract people from all over the world.

You can't be talking about the central valley. I do agree about about natural beauty, great weather and everything but that would be places other than the central valley.

Since you went off topic and attacked Republicans and the last 8 years [Bush administration] Your buddy Obama isn't doing any better but in fact has continued deficit spending, the Afghanistan war for oil, and hasn't helped the economy one bit but gives excuses. I'm not defending the last 8 years but this recession has been brewing for a while even before Bush was in office. There is plenty of blame to go around on both sides of the aisle.

We can't continue to be a consumer based/debt based economy hell bent on policing the world and not expect to have problems.

Afghanistan isn't about oil because, AFAIK, there is no oil there (lotsa poppies for heroin, though). And Afghanistan did play host to Osama Bin Laden, who killed 3,000 of our citizens on 9/11. However, we are bogged down there because Bush's dallying in Iraq has given the Taliban time to regroup and become a credible threat again.

Other than that, everything else you said is true.

Getting back to the Newsweek article, though, I wouldn't see this as an attack on California per se. The fact is that the developers basically own both the Democrats and Republicans in CA and they have been allowed to do whatever they want. That was coupled with lax federal regulation of the financial industry (again, both parties are responsible) and well, some kind of Gotterdamerung was perhaps inevitable. The Newsweek report, though, wasn't as holistic as that in its scope.

Yeah, there have been similar things happening in Arizona and Las Vegas. But California is also still the world's eighth largest economy and has been a national trendsetter since the end of WWII. The lessons of what is occurring in the Central Valley (as well as Riverside County) are studies for other localities to heed.

As for Newsweek itself, I've always viewed it as a poor man's Time (which is pretty poor itself).

Sorry I should have said war for an oil pipeline. Yes not to mention the poppies for heroin we have to protect.

DC and MD are also doing OK. But that's about it.

And just for added fun, how are we going to grow enough food for a burgeoning U.S. population if we keep paving over farmland?
Good point. I guess developers have the idea that their foods are grown in the backs of grocery stores.

Too bad, considering the wonderful produce that comes from there.
