I am moving from the Pacific Northwest to the Bay Area and would like to know which area is the best. I want to live in the East Bay area. I know of Oakland, Alameda, and Berkeley. I don't know what they have to offer, but those are the neighborhoods I know of.

I have a 5 year old and he is in Kindergarden this year. I need good schools. Whether its charter or public, that is a must.

I would like a sense of community. Friendly folks. People that will say hello if eye contact is made. Folks that are gay friendly and not make my sexual orientation be my identity.

My budget will be about $1000. Maybe more if I get a house/room mate.

Thanks!

They'll probably see it here anyway but you may get more responses if you post this up on the San Francisco forum.
