Basically what EscapeCalifornia said, and it's also inexpensive(ie: that rent works in the Denver area, but not really in an area like the OP is asking for in CA) and it's easy to find a quiet neighborhood and not be too isolated considering the variety on neighorhoods within an hour or two of the metro area(from rural areas in the plains and Rockies to the some of the nice urban neighborhoods within Denver and the suburbs in between).

Ok, believe it or not this is a common question here. Based on your criteria I would look into Murrieta and the surrounding area. Briefly checking craigslist there are a number of homes which meet your budget: classifieds - craigslist

Also check the Sierra Foothills: classifieds - craigslist
