Well, first, you need to be able to afford it. Better check out Craigslist to get an idea of rents in SF. Berkeley/Oakland are less pricey, but still a bit of a shocker. Decent transit, though, and good restaurants, jazz clubs, etc.

My guess is by now the OP is happily married with two kids living in Rockland or Placerville.
