Socal is already pretty much a big suburb with satellite downtowns in LA and SD. Norcal is heading towards being a big suburb with satellite downtowns in Sac, SF, and Oakland.

So I guess the real question is how long until the suburb of Norcal and the suburb of Socal meet in the middle? Another 50 years or so? By then will the entire state of california just be one MSA?

According to Demolition Man we'll all be living in the city of San Angeles by 2032.

It will not happen because of a combination of military installations, National Forest lands (Los Padres), natural barriers (mountain ranges). There is very little flat land in the 101 corridor from Santa Barbara to Monterey Bay, and that is mostly agricultural lands with no jobs to attract suburban housing.

Threads like this make me wonder how easy it is for coast dwellers to forget just how vast and empty the open spaces are in California.

I can't be bothered to care since my downtown will apparently be gone by then.

The water infrastructure won't support it.

Hopefully enough people will leave in the next 50 years 'cause of the economy (and what's more important right? ) and it won't be an issue.
The people will stay will have a true love of the nature and spirit of the place and California will be wonderful and underpopulated.
i'm just dreaming.
sigh.

Never gonna happen.

Northern and Southern California both appear to be evolving and develop independent of each other and there is just too much space between them for any need or possibility of touching.

Won't happen. An earthquake will drive the state into the ocean first.
