Most food items are also exempt from sales tax. Although they do have sales tax on soda.

Actually, those of us who live in genuinely DEMOCRATIC/Socialist states (like Oregon) don't have sales tax at all. It is a regressive tax, something that is at odds with our notion of progressive tax ideology.

Give them time,am holding my breath. With the fiscal crisis,it may be only a matter of time before the Bolsheviks running the state cast a greedy eye in that direction. If and when they start taxing your orange juice, corn flakes, and chicken legs at the supermarket checkout stand, then you will know that California is really done for.

All that will do is force people to shop in neighboring cities. It will have exactly the opposite effect they were hoping for.
True about South Gate and Pico Rivera. My parents live in PR, and I make sure I buy what I need to buy (gas, food, blah, blah, blah) where I live (San Bern County) and THEN take it to my parents for the day's event.

I BUY NOTHING IN LA COUNTY, even though I work there.

They'll justify it as a heath measure. Food is too cheap and people are overweight. Of course they'll start by taxing sweets, processed foods, red meat, etc, but will eventually tax everything.
