Palms to Pines Drive to-and-from Palm Desert to Idlywild in the mountains.

I especially recommend this for motorcyclists. Long, windy, little traffic. Cool off for a meal in little Idylwild, which is a tiny artsy community.

Being from the True North, I would recommend Fern Canyon, in the spring

Palm springs aerial tram way. Beautiful view and gives access to those who can not hike much, really unique views. Also the snow at top with 80 temperature at base is great.

San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts, which adjoins the wonderful Exploratorium next door (fun for both kids AND adults).

Only ONE? What's the point of THAT! =P

Anyways, surprised no one has said Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Park. I myself haven't been there, but from pictures I have seen, its absolutely fantastic. It's also very convenient location wise, its since roughly equidistant from San Francisco and Los Angeles.
