Depends on what you're looking for. California offers stunning natural beauty(Yosemite, Redwoods, etc), cultural attractions(various museums, historic buildings, etc across the state), theme parks(Disneyland, Knotts, etc), the ocean, etc

There's really too many must sees for one trip. You will likely have two options...

(1) Pick a specific area, like San Francisco, LA, or San Diego, and spend a lot of time exploring and really getting to know the city.

(2) Travel from San Francisco to LA or SD via the Pacific Coast Highway and spend short amounts of time in various destinations along the way... like Carmel, Big Sur, Santa Barbara, etc...

This is good. Places like amusement parks (Disneyland, Knotts, etc.) are WAY overrated and overpriced. There is nothing quite like the creation itself, with its cities and (real) people/venues close behind.

Obviously the OP is planning to visit Columbia.

I can't help there because I live in California.

How long is your trip? If you have time I'd try to get at least a sampling of some of the diversity of the state; some time in the city (the big three being LA, San Francisco, and San Diego), some time in a beach town, some time in the mountains or the desert, etc. Overall, though, it depends on your time, interests, and budget. You could travel the state for months and not run out of interesting things to see or do. Even if you narrow it down to the state's most famous "must sees" you'd still run into time problems, given that California is so huge.
