A lot longer than it should be. With no traffic at all (driving in the wee early morning hours), 30 minutes. In the middle of the day, 45 minutes to an hour.

Worst commute: Either Thousand Oaks to Huntington Beach (72 miles) OR my 38 mile drive on icy roads in Colorado

Best commute: current commute 18 miles in 23 minutes

Worst commute by a friend: Leona Valley (Palmdale area) to Huntington Beach for two years in a full size V-8 pickup. Now that is beyond nuts.

For me, it's about 40 mins from San Jose to Sunnyvale one-way.
Less than 5 minutes. I walk

Here's an interesting vid about commuting in SP.

Thanks for the post about traffic in Brazil. My sister lived there for 6 months. She says the people don't freak out about such things the way Americans would. In some ways that's good because they don't stress. In other ways, not so good, because there's no enough impetus on actually solving the problem.

I guess its because we know there's nothing that can be done about it. My commute in Brazil is the same distance as driving from Oakland to say Fremont. On a great day it will take 1.5 hrs(rarely that quick), on a normal day it takes 2-3 hrs and on the bad days it can take a bit longer than that. Usually evenings are much worse.

And to be honest, I don't drive in that much, usually I work from the house or commute by helicopter(there's a public helipad on our block and some of my neighbors have their own private helipads(we call them helipontos) at their homes, which might sound glamorous but is actually quite common in São Paulo-which has the largest fleet of helicopters in the world.
