We are moving to Redding, Ca possibly next June. We would love to hear the good and bad about this town. He is an RN and I a surgical asstant. We have 6 year old boy with mild autism, and requires some special needs classes in school. (IEP, therapist) We were wondering what areas are the best parts of town, if there is medical and school help for our son, and what crime is like there. How has the economic situation affected Redding. Any and all info., good or bad, is appreciated. We know that no where is perfect, but we would love to find that little place to call home. We also enjoy the outdoors, hiking, swimming, walks, as well as good places to eat, family fun and date night fun for us. Thanks to all whom reply, and look forward to hearing from you.

Redding is a great place if you love the outdoors....I have a 7 year old boy and we are out at the waterfalls, exploring the creeks and bike riding all the time! If you are in the medical field then finding a job is a lot easier and you can live very comfortably here!

rickinredding--I may be moving out as well. Where would you direct me to look for housing (not too expensive, maybe in the $300k to $500k range)?

The Magnolia - Parkview - Reservoir neighborhoods are probably the worst in Redding because of the crack houses and gangs that control most of the area and other crimes plus they are rundown dirty parts of town anyway. I've lived in south Redding for 13 years and its not as bad but there is still that gang influence out here. your chances of getting shot/stabed or robed out here are less and are about 1 out of 10, if you are a night person that is. Pretty much anyone in Redding knows where the weed at because Redding is a main hub for drug trade and marijuana plantations that go throughout the whole state, trust me I saw this abandoned car that was just stacked with this stuff right of the freeway and cops pulling out bags filled to the top and then laying them down on the ground.

Live or purchase in the newer areas, Riverpark Highlands, Country Heights, and Ridgewood Estates (really child friendly). Anything in the newer areas on the North part of town. Those neighborhoods have some land.

I have a developmentally disabled brother, we have him in another state with my sisters, because Redding doesn't even come close to the quality other areas have.

Good luck here, hold onto your jobs if you have them lined up.

Default Any where but Redding,CA

redding is the last place to move to unless you never go to town or always carry a gun. the schools are lousy, & law enforcement is terrible & getting worse. we finally escaped after 12 years. it wasn't bad at first but it got bad fast & worsens by the day. Plus add over 200 newly released prison detainees to the list of countless sex offenders (600+ i think by now). you can buy a nice house for $500k, preferably in a gated community(not Lake California), with your own security camera system connected to one of the security companies that call police. then wait 20 - 30 minutes for cops to show up. if you live outside city limits the sheriffs dept probably won't show up at all, except for murder. when they do show up they'll be visibly irritated you called them & probably won't even file a report. they always have something more important to deal with & they have half the force they had 10 years ago. good luck with any special needs programs, they've pretty much all been de-funded. good luck there but with your credentials and work experience i'd move anywhere but redding,ca.
