23 feet would be a wimpy day at Mavericks. Triple that number, now you're talking.

jknic ... if you're going to be in Vallejo (which i just now noticed) .... head over to the coast (visit S.F.) then hook up with coastal HWY1, down through Half Moon Bay (if it's winter, bring your binoculars to view the surfers at Mavericks) then continue down to Santa Cruz (visit the boardwalk ... more of a summer thing to do) then down to Monterey (visit the most wonderful aquarium) then down through Carmel and onto Big Sur (spend the night if you can) and then down to Cambria (visit the Hearst Castle in San Simeon on the way) then continue down to Cambria ... then turn around and head back up north (avoid the insanity of SoCal )
There's your Pacific Ocean road trip.
Happy Trails.

Thank-you very much, it's still in the planning stages so we're trying to figure out where we want to go, then the route, then the cost, then when we can go. As for the Asbury Park comment, I've always wanted to go there to see abandoned buildings along the beach. Is there anything "Weird NJ" like in CA near the coast?

P.S. If you think the Pacific is powerful, come over here and witness the Atlantic during a hurricane! Either way I love the ocean and can't wait to see a new one.

I don't think there are any beaches near Cali, I think it is inland. There are some nice beaches near Cartagena though, although airfare to Colombia is steep.

although the socal beaches aren't as nice (generally speaking of course), i think that you would be doing your family a great disservice if you did not see at least one beach down here. anywhere between SD and LA will give you an idea, but places like Pacific Beach in SD, Huntington Beach in OC and Santa Monica/Venice should be pretty nice and interesting for an east coaster.

In South Orange County I'd recommend Laguna Main Beach, Niguel Beach Park, Doheny, or San Clemente for out of towners. Best of these is Niguel (although it's a bit of a hike down from the parking lot and back up).

Well we just call that a pier around here. Infact the picture in Santa Barbara is Stearns Wharf. Never heard it called a board walk. I always pictured a boardwalk to be parallel to the ocean and not into the ocean. But then I have never been to a place that called it a boardwalk.

We do have piers in the area if that is what the OP is looking for. Port Hueneme Pier extends into the ocean and is great to go fishing on. Ventura Pier is similar, Stearns Wharf in Santa Barbara, And the famous Santa Monica Pier. Never heard them called as a Board walk though.

If that is what a board walk is then we have plenty. Just that we don't call them that at least in my part of California.

Lol I was just curious if there were any, they make a great conclusion to a day at the beach. A board walk usually is an elevated walkway parallel to the ocean made of wood with various shops and amusements on the side opposite the ocean with the occasional pier.
