I have lived in CA for 28 years and I think it is slowly turning into a socialist state that would make Stalin proud. The legislature spends the whole year churning out laws that do one of two things, telling citizens and business what they cannot do, and figuring out new ways to raise taxes.
1) Liberals in San Diego? That's a new one. Are you sure you live in California? What's next..the raving liberals in Bakersfield and Fresno? Anyways, 68% of California's population lives around LA or the Bay Area, so its natural that they would have the most say in the state government. Unless you don't like Democracy, you have to deal with that everywhere.

2) Yeah, because there are Gulags and mass-industrial projects all around California with black cars driving around at night taking unsuspecting people away saying 'dasvidanya tovarish'. Whatever makes you feel better at night.

What the hell is 'Real America' anyways? 13% of America lives in California, so by definition, California is 'Real America'. Think using your brain, not using your feelings.

Sadly, for some reason, the modern version of the Conservative, operates off feelings, not by facts.

Yeah, someone will call me a libbie for saying that, yup, sure, A Ford pickup driving farming Libbie with a camo Cabela's hat, that be me.

I grew up in California, SF/ Bay Area to be exact- and I don't want to go back. I know some people love it-- but between the schools, taxes, car fees, crowds-- I can't understand why.

All I can say is my parents moved here in the early 1960's, bought a home in 1965. lived there untill 2003, sold that place and moved to Arizona to a home they are still living in to this day. Yes they cashed out after my dad's retirement. They took their money with them and love it over in the Phoenix area. They did love the area and still do, but it is cheaper to live in Arizona and for them they see their dollars going further in AZ than in CA.

I left CA because I dislike the high taxes, there were a lot of snobby people I had to put up with (the last place I lived in before I left), there were people who had never been out of state/out of town and didn't know any better (Bakersfield), pollution, depressing news stories, etc. etc. etc.

I'm much happier where I'm at now, at least I can do what I want..

CA, I don't have to get my car smog checked. EAT THAT!

There are things I LIKE, not love, about here, but they are not enough to keep me here long term and to outweigh the negatives that go along to living here (for me). My family and friends are not here either, so I feel no "pull" to this place. My Mom does live here but she is sick and tired of the rat race and will be leaving eventually also.

Typically I don't post into, or even read, threads that get past 5 pages long ~ they usually lose their sizzle after awhile.

I'm one of the few(?) who left California and wish to go back. I'm one of the few Oregon transplants (32 years ago!) who doesn't hate California, nor do I care when people "react" whenever I defend the Golden State. They all just think I'm a little nuts. Well, I'm not nuts, but I've always marched to a different drummer ~ without apologies for it.

I've also lived in Texas, which has its own problems. And Oregon definitely has its own as well. For one thing, Oregon has never been abundant in job opportunities, even when the US economy was going good.

Personally, I like the varied scapes and beauty of California, the blue skies and the climate, and the ocean. My family is all still down there (and none of them has an urge to live elsewhere, although a couple of nieces lived in Key West for 3 years then went back).

There are a LOT of things that do concern me, and as a political conservative I would squawk over election results, just as I do here. And, getting ideas from posters above, smog-checking wouldn't be new to me ~ it's done in Oregon, too. Crime in the Portland-Metro is pretty high, too (although you'd never guess it to read the Portland Forum). I could complain about California traffic, which really depends on "where"; however, Portland-Metro traffic is a nightmare, too.

Illegal immigration and an over-inflated cost of living are, to me, the biggest major drawbacks to California ~ both of which were ignored by the state leaders and law-makers. As for housing, the greed blame is to be shared by many.

Pollution? Well, okay. I can remember when San Francisco had layers of charcoal grey smog looming over its city way back in the 60's. Haven't noticed it since the 80's whenever I've visited numerous times. The San Joaquin Valley, my home area, still blesses me with clear skies of a million stars. I was there in February and would stare up every night at the awesome sight. We may have cleaner air where I'm at now, but because of cloudiness and city light pollution, ya can't see a damn thing most of the time (something that I'm sure isn't offered in L.A. or the Bay Area).

You've just described why most people who don't want to leave or want to move back don't care to get involved in discussions like this - and why you'll continue to see naysayers dominating these discussions. Many people like living there and don't care to waste their time apologizing for it or explaining themselves - most everyone I know living there is like that. Sure some people might think they're crazy, but millions continue to find fulfillment despite all the problems.

I can't wait to get back there and enjoy all of the great things the state has to offer, and more importantly, reconnect with all of the relationships we left behind. We'll take the bad with the good. We've realized that the relationships make it all worth it

I'll say what's on my mind now. I've been living in CA since 1983 and the truth is I now no longer hate CA but I don't actually love it overall. I guess you could say that I'm neutral about this topic. This state does have its perks but it also has many issues/problems. However, those that don't like it I don't blame them at all and I totally understand why. I've been to some other US states, well a few actually(NV, AZ,OR and FL). These states also have their perks and IMO you can have a better quality of life in those states. All that said, I guess you can notice from my response that CA is FAR from my favorite place but I put up with it as much as I can.
