Is there anyone out there from the Imperial Valley that can give an informative description of the different cities in the IV? I am interested in knowing about El Centro, Imperial, Calexico and Brawley specifically.

What do these places look like? What is the difference among them? Where would one go to find information on apartments for rent there (carigslist has very little)? Any other impressions or comments about the area in general would be greatly appreciated, especially beyong the usual hot, hispanic and poor. Thanks!

I'm in the IV. El Centro is in the center of the valley (hence the name 'the center' haha) and has the most amenities, shopping, rentals, etc. There are nice (ish) areas and a lot of not-so-nice areas. Rent is pretty reasonable throughout the valley.

Imperial is very close to El Centro, it has kind of a smaller town feel.

Calexico...I'd avoid it. Lots of crime, dirty. It is right on the border and it feels like you're already in Mexico.

Brawley is fine. I lived there for a few years. I live in Holtville now, very small town.

Jobs are few and far between in the valley. We have the highest unemployment rate in the entire US.

For rentals, check out the classifieds on ivpressonline.com

Good luck, let me know if you have any more questions!

Thanks. I was wondering, what would a typical utility bill be in the summer for a one bedroom apartment? Also, what would typical rent be for an apartment there?

A one bedroom would range from about $500-$700. I pay $725 for a 3 bedroom house, but prices are a little higher in El Centro or Brawley.

My electric bill in the summer can be $600-$700, but, again...that's a 3 br house. Even in a 1br apartment, $400-$500 is normal in the summer. It is significantly lower in the winter.

Like it or not, Imperial Valley (along with the lower Colorado River valley around Yuma) provides our country with the vast majority of vegetables consumed in the November to May season. Surrounded by an unforgiving desert, IV has some great farmlands. Looking for work? Anyone who has skills in working on concrete or aqueduct construction might find a job on the huge project going on, where they are lining the All American Canal with concrete.

Absolutely! It knocked almost everything off of my walls and shelves. No major damage, but it scared my kids! I was at the post office when it happened and there was a lot of broken glass.

How did every one react in the post office at that time? I imagine with glass breaking people were prbably getting scared. I would like to know what people in a Home Depot or Wal Mart do during a quake with those massive shelves...must be scary.

How often do you feel quakes there anyways? Is it cyclical, like you feel a lot and then can go several years without any?
