Yes, the scenery in Big Sur really is that amazing, actually More. If you have an opportunity to make that drive and you don't then you are truly missing out on something great. A dramatic sunset at Julia Pfeiffer Burns SP (see the pic above with the waterfall pouring directly onto the beach) is what I call a 'glory moment'.

The stretch of highway 1 from Morro bay to Monterrey has to be one of the most stunning places in the planet. I drove that road twice and was lucky to have crispy and sunny weather both times-
I stopped at all the state parks, San Simeon, Paso Robles (great town off the coast), Nepenthe, Nassimiento-Fergusson Road, saw sunrise and sunset, marine life along the way...
Stop often, go slow, roll the windows down (better if you have a convertible or sunroof) and I guarantee that you will remember this as the best road-trip ever... The scenery of this place draws me like no place else.
