Hi, I'm a young single guy, 26 years old. Thinking about moving alone to California and I don't know a soul there. Basically, having some problems with family and life in general and just want to get the heck out of dreary cold Michigan. Start a clean slate in life. What is a good city for a young guy like me to move to? I like the sun (originally from Colorado) and the water, like to jetski, have fun. A young single population would be good too. Somewhere vibrant and fun but not too crazy. I have a degree and am working on getting another one. Currently work in the cell phone industry making $50K a year.
-Any ideas? Thanks!

Most people I know that like the sun and water tend towards Southern CA... I think areas like San Diego attract plenty of young people and there is a huge Navy presence there to...

Santa Cruz in Northern CA might also fit your description... although very small by comparison to San Diego.

I work with young singles that live in SF on 50k per year... things are tight financially, but doable if you are single and are flexible in your housing requirements...

Berkeley has always been considered vibrant... but also a bit crazy... so probably not a good match for you.

You might even want to consider the Sacramento area. It's bordered by major rivers on two sides, is at the edge of the San Joquin Delta, near lakes, including Tahoe, there are plenty of young people, a vibrant and growing night life and lots of sunshine. It's also cheaper than many other areas with numerous colleges in and around it. The Napa Valley wine country and San francisco are an easy drive and you should be able to find housing that meets your needs and finances and maybe even a job. The latter would be my first concern.

Good luck!

It is one of the great disapointments of my life that my 27 year old lives in the Sacramento Area. Life is too short to live on flat ground.

Why not fix the problems first, if possible, unless your life is in danger?

But yes, what you want is definitely in a number of places here in California.

Beware, though, if you move to San Francisco; it is more or less eternal spring there, which means it rarely gets very warm there. It doesn't get nearly as cold as Michigan, and (so far as I have heard) there would still be more opportunities in CA than in MI, jobwise.

But the geographical solution to problems is not always the best. Weigh it carefully.

As Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) once observed, "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco."

No flat ground?

Do you live on a hill?
Are your floors slanted?
How do you walk around with 1 leg higher than the other all the time?

Maybe the Truckee / Tahoe area will suit you.
It's vibrant, there are plenty of young people around, you'll be close enough to the coast when you want some ocean and close to San Francisco (and close Santa Cruz which is another possibility for sure but i don't know where you'd jet ski) the winters are snowy (lots!!! but it's such happy snow ) and it won't be dreary like Michigan, Lake Tahoe is splendid and the summers are beautiful and the Sierra range is wonderful.
Good luck.
Everyone deserves to start a new life if they need to or want to (no matter how young), "family" is overrated (for many) and California, if you can swing it, is a great place to begin again!
