The commute to San Ramon could take 1 hr and might take 1.5 hrs depending on if there are any accidents. The commute to Modesto will not be bad. Yes quite a few people do the commute towards the Bay area. If you want any listings of houses in any of these areas send me a Private Message.

Commute to Modesto, no problem 25-30 minutes. Commute to San Ramon, well lets just say with your lack of traffic commuting experience it might be a tad stressful for a while. I think 45min-1 hour during HEAVY commute times is about right barring no accident, if accident occurs who knows. I would live closer to San Ramon and make your hubby have the longer physical commute a he would have less traffic and less issues.

The 580 commute into the Bay area is one of the heaviest in the country.

That being said Tracy is more affordable than living anywhere on the west side of the Altamont Pass.

You should do some reading on the 580 corridor traffic before you make your decision. If you rent you could always move after to get settled in and find out what will work best for the both of you.

Many threads on your topic in the San Francisco forum. Read a few.
