Naples is highly covedted for the retirement group.
Parts of Miami are wonderful. All the places you mentioned Coral Gables, Miami Beach on up to Palm Beach.
California is just more diverse. OC, San Diego, up through LA, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Monterey/Carmel, Santa Cruz and up to San Francisco......great towns abound.
As I stated in another thread, if conditions were right, Id have my permanent residence on the California coast and a condo in Miami....

I've been all over the state and aside from some of the people here and the large % those who can't drive, South Florida Metro Area ie Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties is where it's at. two turntables and a microphone lol
I've never been someone that enjoys "going to the beach" so the SW FL beaches never phased me very much. I think that Fort Myers is one of the weirdest cities I've ever been to, nevermind lived in. I can't even put my finger on it...I just really, really dislike it there. Naples is okay...I don't enjoy nightlife so that didn't bother me so much about it, I just felt it was one of the places people purchase their "winter home" at and not much else. Very wealthy, but transient feeling.

Orlando was just a bit too...well the word I want to use is "ghetto" but I don't know if that is appropriate...for me (where I lived, anyhow). I liked it better than Fort Myers, but I still didn't enjoy it very much. Much of the city just felt depressing to me.

Agreed 100%.

Same with most of north central Florida cities. In summer, w/humidity it feels depressing. I grew up there. Most of my life I just felt I never belonged. I can't explain why. SoFL like SoCal people are more accepting and I am not asked a million questions. It's just 'How are you?'.

Most of North Florida (as in, Ocala and up) felt waaaay to "Southern" to me, which is just something I don't like and can't identify with.

Miami and South Florida in general is like another world compared to that. Coral Gables *is* absolutely beautiful, I will say. I used to love going to the Vizcaya.

I see well I just sorta figured by your name that your a marine/beach loving type of person.

Florida isn't for everybody I admit, even with CA's negatives there are things there that constantly entice me however I started watching Jim The Realtor's channel on youtube, and got a reality check.

Well...I should have clarified a bit... I LOVE the ocean/shore/cliffs/Pacific. I jog on the beach, read a book on the beach, etc. However, I'm not crazy about wearing a bikini and/or swimming in the ocean (which is kind of what FL beaches are conducive for). I like my beaches to be cold, wavy and windy!

California and the world are not overpopulated. But the natural resources of both ARE poorly managed.

Miami metro is very nice and jumping, but there is absolutely nowhere to get out of town and go on a winding country road on your motorcycle. It's Miami 24/7. There is just nowhere to escape to break it up, since Miami metro backs up to the Everglades. In Cali, one direction is the beach, and the other is the mountains.
