So I keep seeing these slick TV ads for California, as in why everyone should move there. They promote the benefits of working in California, ending with Gov. Arnold saying, "When can you start?".

This seems wrong on two levels. First, spending government money for silly promotion when schools and government services are broke, and second, the fact that CA's unemployment rate is well above the national average...why would anyone ask "when can you start?".

For those in CA, you probably don't see these as much. But they are running quite frequently around the country. I just wonder why.

Those ads are about 5 years old. I'm not sure if they are funded by the state. I think they are probably funded with private money from the Tourism organization, but I could be wrong because I know states like Michigan and Illinois pay for theirs with tax dollars, both are broke, and both keep running them too.

I had forgotten about those Jeff Daniels ads for Michigan. I wonder how much success they had with Californians.
"Honey, load up the truck! We're gettin' the heck out of Santa Barbara. We're goin' to Detroit before it gets too popular."

And I heard that CA is laying off tens of thousands more school employees as of today. Not sure who is responsible for the ads, but they sure seem out of place in today's environment. (And yes, they have been running for many years)

I heard on the radio the other day that they're going to raze whole neighborhoods in Detroit that are nothing but abandoned and foreclosed houses, and turn the land into park land. Sounds good to me, but it's still Detroit after all.

Detroit IS in bad shape, there is no question. But this is the California thread. And I still can't believe that Arnold is asking "when can you start?" when the state is obviously not exactly in a hiring mode. It would be funny if it wasn't so sad.

No. It's still funny. Gallows humor, but funny still and all.
