That's why "these people" come to a site like city-data-forum ... to learn.
There are lots of different ways to be clueless.

I recomend Hermosa Beach if you can afford it. People are outdoors all the time. Its so full of young people. I lived there for 2 years and loved it. But you would be looking at $1500 a month minimum.

For our budget, San Bernardino and Bakersfield were about right. Not exactly by the beach, but it's a great way to get started. We just moved to California from Wisconsin. Since it was such a far move and we (husband and I) are also young, it wasn't likely for us to get great jobs. If you move to a cheaper area like Bakersfield or San Bernardino, the beach is only a couple hours away and you can afford to live while you make new friends, and network or go to school for a better job.

You should at least take a brief trip out to the areas you're considering, though. Some of the areas that we had researched and liked, turned out to be very different from our taste. Also, you should either save up at least $10,000 or have a job lined up b/c it will be difficult to get someone to rent to you otherwise.

Yes, some things can be more expensive in California than in some other areas of the country, but if you shop around for better prices on food, gas, milk, apartments, etc. you'll find some that are really good deals. We have a really nice apartment in Bakersfield that is $765 for 2-bedroom with 2 pets. Much cheaper than any major southern Wisc. city!!! We've saved a lot of $ on gas and groceries since we've been here.

FYI: you need to get a Cal. driver's license with in 10 days of becoming a resident, and you have to do a written test for that. Oh, yeah, and DON'T go to Bank of America. You'll probably need to get a bank right away though, b/c your debit card will likely have a 45 cent fee everytime you use it here. Let me know if you need anymore tips or anything on making the move.

Default Do it! The Sooner The Better

California is one of the greatest places in the world. It is never going to be any cheaper to live here than right now. Do not overthink. Pick SF or LA and go. Everything else will sort itself out. Just don't be afraid to live in a city you've never seen in the movies. If SF try Oakland (a truly beautiful and tragically underrated city) and if LA try Long Beach (in many ways like Oakland...less internal beauty but the beach makes up for it).

Flip a coin and GO, friend. Good luck!

P.S. Ignore the cynical posters. They are all out here because they did just what you want to do. Expensive? Hell yeah. But you are young and it doesn't matter. You can always leave if you hate it. There are people with less money than you who make it work. It is YOUR world. Go where you want.

Credit Unions are pretty good as many or most of them share networks and amongst those there are no ATM fees. Some of them (Financial Partners, Kinecta) also have safe deposit boxes too.

and did you read the post from the person who took advise like you are giving, moved from Seattle to Los Angeles, is having trouble finding a job, hates L.A. etc or "moved" who lives in San Diego..

It is fine to dream, that is what life is all about, but today isn't the time for anyone to pick up and relocate regardless, certainly not to California unless they have a profession and I mean a real one, that is in high demand.
