I want to make the move to California this summer but not sure which part? SoCal or NoCal, San Francisco ok? I've been to LA and love it but there are some bad things such long commutes to work. And even LA is pretty large so I still need to narrow it down even more.

Some things I'm looking for:
close to work, less than 25min drive, prefer 10min drive
looking for a programming/java job
affordable, 1.1-1.5k rent
good Asian restaurants
safe neighborhood
prefer a suburban to urban area, not boonesville
people are mostly nice/polite and don't give you dirty attitudes for no reason.

I keep to myself mostly and enjoy staying home and playing video games so I don't need to be in a happening area like Hollywood, but wouldn't mind that neither as I do like going out once in a while.

I'm now a mid level java programmer working in Reston, Va..somewhat close to DC. Don't have a job lined up yet, want to have a target city before I start job hunting.

It's 69 times easier to find a home after you've found a job than it is to find a job after you've found a home.

What do you mean? is there no demand for programmers?

Programmers stopped being well paid in the late 90's. Now you either take a McDonald's wage or you will be replaced with cheap labor overseas.

I think he may be trying to find a location, then a job, then a home.

If your coming to CA, you will live as close to your job as possible. #1 on the agenda should be finding a job then finding the right neighborhood.

You might find something but you have to talk about more than just java. Programmers are overabundant in California during this economy, I know several who have left the field for other types of jobs.

The companies also are hiring for the exact knowledge/skill/experience they want given the large pool of applicants. The managers know they can be picky in hiring.

Tech companies are scattered all over the state, not just the Bay Area or Southern California. Sacramento, San Luis Obispo, Fresno, etc all have tech companies that hire programmers. For example, last I heard VisionOne here in Fresno was looking for programmers, as were a couple of other local companies. But they were specific about what they were looking for.

I think you could find your current checklist of wants in many parts of the state (suburban, Asian Restaurants, etc is pretty generic for California). So you might want to pin it down a little more since the state is hundreds of miles long.
