STOCKTON, CA - A Stockton police sergeant earned nearly a quarter million dollars in 2009, placing fourth among city employees on a newly-released salary list.
Sgt. Jan Goodnight's base salary was actually less than $100,000, but after earning overtime of more than $100,000 , her total gross income was higher than $222,000.

The salary list of city of Stockton employees included 434 people earning more than $100,000 in 2009. The structure of government salaries earned plenty of criticism among shoppers at Stockton's Lincoln Center

Financial crisis in CA? Not for state and government employees. Times have never been better.

The 200K range is a CA school district superintendent's salary. ...Just thinking out loud here.

Smith said Goodnight's overtime compensation came from state grants for various traffic enforcement operations. He also said Goodnight took assignments that other police sergeants turned down.
"She gave up a lot of free time in days off to come back and work overtime," said Smith.

So, I think instead of being upset with someone who works hard people should be upset with the state government giving out grants for seatbelt and DUI enforcement, right? I mean the state is the one who enabled the Sgt to work so much overtime. Why does everyone hate the person who works hard for the money they earn?

I think there are a lot of bigger problems in our government than someone working a lot of overtime. If that is what people consider our main problem in government I continue to lose faith in our society.

Do you even live in California anyways, think first?

Just another person using the loopholes of the system to get what they feel is deserved, amazing the Sgt. was allowed to work so much overtime. I sure hope she didn't make any major mistakes on her cases that involve the lives of people, due to being overworked. Not that she didn't deserve the money for the time she worked of course, if you do the time you should get the pay.

Perhaps instead of having grants for something that police already enforce they could just add the sums of the grants to the hiring budget; allowing more hires into the departments resulting in a bigger less stressed police force instead of a smaller incredibly over worked one.

Way over board. Most of the spread sheet is out of whack, great unions though, bankrupting the cities and state governments in California.
