The Bay Area has a pretty large Jewish community, just not as big as L.A.'s (although Marin and S.F. have a higher percentage of Jews than L.A. does)

Jewish Pop by California County:

1. Marin County, California 18,500 7.5%
2. San Francisco County, California 49,500 6.4%
3. Los Angeles County, California 564,700 5.9%
4. San Mateo County, California 24,500 3.5%
5. Santa Clara County, California 54,000 3.2%
6. San Diego County, California 70,000 2.5%
7. Alameda County, California 32,500 2.3%
8. Contra Costa County, California 22,000 2.3%
9. Santa Cruz County, California 6,000 2.3%

I am surpised LA is not number one. Also Ventura doesn't even make the list and there is a decent size community around Calabasas.

Calabasas is in LA County.

Ventura County does have a decent sized Jewish community, I'd guess it's #10 just beneath Santa Cruz County.

LA has 287,700 more jews than all those other counties combined. That's a pretty meaningful statistic too.

i've seen similar threads posted in the past. out of curiousity, why the need to be around other jews? i understand the whole 'birds of a feather' idea, but most jews seem to pretty main stream IMHO, and in many cases you can't even tell someone is jewish in areas where there are lots of white people, unless they tell you of course (or they wear a yamulke or something like that). i guess i just figure that as long as people are cool and somewhat like minded, i don't care what their religion or heritage is.

another question. what would your reaction (as a jew) be to someone like me (a gentile) wanting to live in a jewish area?

i ask these questions with no pretense or prejudice, i'm just curious. thanks.

As a gentile who grew up in West LA amongst a large number of Jews: there is no problem with non-Jews living in Jewish areas in California. Outside of one or two Hasidic neighborhoods in NYC there's no problem with non-Jews living in Jewish areas anywhere in the USA. In fact - L.A. is one of the few big cities in the world in which Jews and Muslims get along fine.

There is a large Jewish community in the Bay Area.
There is also a Jewish community in San Diego.
I don't know anything about the Central Coast.

Didn't know about SD. SD seems to be very Waspy. SF does not have any Jewish areas but I am sure it has a decent size Jewish population but it seems to fairly assimilated and spread out compared to LA where it is concentrated around certain areas.

Temple Beth El Aptos Jewish Community Center

I like what they say on their home page .... "Reform Judaism, Santa Cruz Style".
I don't know what the Jewish community is like in the area but i drive by the temple (in Aptos) almost daily and i appreciate that it's there.
