My wife and I are drawn to California, but we are not sure where we want to end up. We feel as though San Deigo county may be the place, but are open to other areas in the state that meet our criteria.

The things that we are looking for are warm weather, mountains, rolling hills, not a city or an extremely remote place. We typically like what people refer to as "bohemian". We also want a spanish style home with acreage.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Well, I think one of the biggest questions to ask when you are talking about where you want to live in CA is how much can you afford? And how many acres do you consider acreage? If it's more than one your options completely change.

Well, if you're going to try to find all that in San Diego County, I really hope that you have a few million $ set aside... the catch is 'acreage'.

The place that meets all those criteria (though it gets a bit cooler in winter, and hotter in summer) is just outside of Lincoln, CA. It has rolling hills, is located close enough to Sacramento to have an economy, and is a pretty laid-back little town. However, development in that area is skyrocketing, and prices are going up to match the pace.

If I had the money (which I don't), that would be the place I'd live.

Thanks for your replies. Starrynight227, could you tell me the options both ways in terms of acreage, we don't want to limit ourselves too much. Money has no bearing.

Well if money is not an issue....
I would checkout Mt. Helix and Kensington areas in San Diego. You can get about an acre lot with probably pretty good views.
But when you say bohemian the first thing I think of is Santa Cruz. Not necessarily hot but it is a very laid back and artsy town. You can check out Aptos too which is right next to Santa Cruz.

If you want to live near the coast, finding acreage will be difficult. That's something you will just have to search out. It will cost a fortune if it's out there though.

Lastly, you might want to check out Napa too. I don't know how bohemian it is but rolling hills, warm and you can get lots of acreage.

You should look at Rancho Sante Fe. It has what you want> rolling hills and lots of large Spanish style homes on acreage in San Diego County. A little further north in the county is Valley Center. It's a bit more inland, and gets hotter in the summer, but also has acreage and hills. It's also much more reasonable than RSF. Look at both, they're vastly different in character.

Be sure to check out the many, many pictures in the San Diego sub-forum--especially if, as you say, money is no problem. Those ocean views are truly breathtaking.

Leucadia use to be very bohemian......not sure on the acreage part. lol lol Another place is Venice Beach ....a little gritty ...but a fun area. (LA area though)What kind of money are you planning on spending? If you have millions then...Rancho Santa Fe is gorgeous...not bohemian.....but you probably could look past that if you can afford to live there. lol
