I think some ppl jumped to conclusions and missed that part of your post. Since finding work is not your main concern, your main objective is to find the area for your son with lower pollen count from trees. And since you lived with your family along the coast before without experiencing these symptoms, it is probably a good place to look. Bakersfield or Palmdale are not known for good air quality and not normally recommended for ppl with asthma, lung problems or other related allergies.

1st piece of advice: Please don't call us "Cali". Many of us find it annoying. Furthermore, Cali is a city in the South American nation of Colombia.

Proper abbreviations: CA, or Calif (less common). for the state at large. SoCal for Southern California. NorCal for Northern California.

Geez, can we give it a rest already!

Mostly this seems to be an issue with some of our "older" (and more "obsessive") folks with time on their hands, while for younger ones, not so much. But you can draw your own conclusions here: //www.city-data.com/forum/calif...9071-cali.html

California English is actually a recognized "dialect" among etymologists, with regional differences throughout the state:
"The full state name is commonly substituted with the abbreviation "Cali", although this is far more common in Northern California, and is almost never used in the Los Angeles basin area."

Otherwise, "Kalifornia", "The Golden State", "Home of the Governator", "Cal", "Cali", "The state that's up to its eyeballs in debt" ..... it's all good, welcome, and feel free to talk the way you want here.

BTW, I'd recommend you look into Chico.

Even though your wife is from Palmdale, there are NO jobs here or anywhere near here! Especially in the tech industry! But you will find extremely cheap housing here all the way through Bakersfield. Bakersfield is absolutely TOO UGLY AND SMOGGY with polution! The air is actually brown and you can see it! Very difficult to breathe! Palmdale area has an 18% unemployment rate and unless you are aerospace being transferred in, there are NO jobs.

Although it's far, if you're a tech guy and your wife needs to work, go to San Jose or Northern California. Stay toward the coast....yes, it's expensive up there-but then if you need jobs, you'll find HIGH paying jobs, better education for your child, better jobs for your wife and better quality of life! The last thing you want is to be stuck commuting on the freeway for the sake of living a little cheaper.

I know this because I lived in the Bay area! Yes, it was very expensive, but the time it freed us up for family and children sure made it worth it! It was the best time in my married life! We had a family life, jobs and top notch education and activities to keep us busy! Plus, friends loved to visit because there were things to do.

I now live in Palmdale, actually Quartz Hill. While nice, the quality of life is terrible! People out here are unhappy, depressed, anti-social and life is hard. Sure housing is cheap, but the weather is so bad that everyone stays cooped up in their homes! Okay if you're that sort, but doesn't sound like you are.

I'm a realtor so I can say this with confidence....go where the money is-you won't regret it! Go where the jobs are-you can't go wrong! Go where real estate appreciates fast-you can't miss! When you go further inland, it's hard to sell when and if you need to. Utilities cost more, gas for driving costs more, everything costs more-that's what most folks don't realize. Good luck!
