It has nothing to do with political affiliation, those that have chosen to educate themselves about the benefits of Marijuana will vote for it. Those that can not think for themselves will vote against it out of (Reefer Madness) fear.

Do you have any evidence for that?

I really believe it is not a Liberal vs Conservative, it is Stupid vs Intellengent. There is so much revenue to be made from it being legalized. Just think about the budgets that are in so much red

Proponents of legalizing 'and taxing' dope are trying to mask their efforts as some kind of revenue generator for state government. Whatever 'taxes' dope smokers would pay would not come even close to covering the societal costs of hundreds of thousands of more Californians getting high, the accidents and health problems they would cause, and other societal costs.
California Republicans will fight this and any other measure to expand drug use in California. When it comes to this kind of legislation, there's a reason they call it 'dope.'"
The CA GOP are still whores of the California Correctional Peace Officers Association and - with a few exceptions - refuse to give up the tired "law and order" policies that have bankrupted the state. This includes Meg Whitman, who talks about cutting excess state workers yet has also said she won't cut any prison jobs - talk about a contradictory agenda!
TBF the Dems in California are also whores of the CCPOA, to prevent any perceptions of being "soft on crime" and because It's A Union. Barbara Boxer's position on marijuana is no different than the official GOP position described above.

Yeah, "
Queen Meg (http://www.sacbee.com/2010/03/25/2631834/meg-whitman-wants-to-build-prisons.html - broken link)" probably isn't so surprising, but Boxer, and apparently even Dianne Feinstein with the same position too.... that's pretty pitiful!

So beneath the "legalization" arguments & attitudes (for & against), sometimes it seems like folks' experiences from then, and their underlying attitudes now re: the whole "60's thing", are still being played out.
Well, the 60s were a wild and crazy time for just about all who experienced them. A lot of good and bad occured during those years. Everything from Vietnam, psychedelic drug usage, Charlie Manson, peace rallies, free love, some great rock music, crazy cults, JFK's assassination, etc... It was one the most, if not the most tumultuous decade in our nation's history.
Whether or not that effects someone's perspective on legalization of weed is hard to say. Although those who experienced the 60s may have learned a few things along the way. I know for many rational thinkers including conservatives one can't simply lump everything together and assume that pot legalization will lead to more Charlie Manson type cult communes of the 60s. So the whole hell in a handbasket idea doesn't really hold much water.
Also believe it or not many conservatives and as well as moderates who lived through the 60s learned vis a vis observation and sometimes direct experience that the wild lifestyles of extemes were not necessarily beneficial or good for one's health or state of mind. Sure most everyone wants to be free to experiment at some point in their lives. But at what cost to one's self and others? Many ppl OD'd, wound up in horrific accidents, mental hospitals, joined cults, etc... So its not surprising that some of yesterday's hippies lean a bit more toward center or even the right today. Experience is a great instructor if one chooses to learn from it.

Obviously not everybody was necessarily a "hippie" back then, and the so-called "counter-culture" was actually a fairly small minority of folks. So while we all lived thru (aka survived) that time, we also responded to it differently, although as you point out, it did temper everyone's experiences, both right and left. And while some have no doubt drifted further "rightward" since, I question if maybe it didn't also "freak out" (to borrow a phrase) alot of other folks, who
still haven't recovered and now seek a return to the "status quo", circa 1955, as a result!
So I'm just suggesting that there may still be alot of issues from that era that many of us haven't "sorted out" yet, like the limits of personal freedom, the appropriate roles and limits of authority, military & the government, what sort of society we want to be, race & gender roles, and even just our emotional associations from back then. For some, I think the "legalization" debate still represents many of those underlying issues.... for better or worse.
For example,
these guys sure never got over it!

I don't think legalizing marijuana has enough good effects on the people. I don't care what you say, driving under the influence of that stuff is not a safe thing and it is not possible to test for it. I've done it through high school and haven't touched the stuff for quite a few years now, I definitely notice a difference and it seems the only people who agree it isn't so bad are the people who smoke it, but the ones who quit seem to realize that it flat out isn't good for you.
You can make the alcohol debate.. but it doesn't negate the fact that marijuana is not good for you, whether or not alcohol is legal doesn't mean you should make something else that is bad for your health legal.
The people that sell pot and go to prison will just find something else that is illegal or just do something else to make money. Will we just keep making everything legal until we find something that won't put "innocent" people in prisons? People go to prison for selling very large amounts of pot.. trust me these people aren't just some nice guy selling that much stuff, chances are they have a lot of other crimes under their belt. I'm more than happy to have those people in jail.

You seems so out of sync with everyone else in California [like you don't belong here]. Are you a Republican?
