Nothing wrong with an RV. The small space forces you to not buy a lot of stupid things, it's your own, and it's easy to move since you're already packed.

Good idea. Just takes a little planning for parking and the occasional stop to dump the "used" water tanks.

What county? What city? It matters a lot. Would you ask the same question about NY? Separating NYC from the largely rural state?

Land costs and regulatory burden vary greatly from place to place, CA is a big state. In some places like LA county, it would be far more expensive to build vs. buy. In other, more remote counties it could be cheaper.

All being relative it's cheaper to build one if you act as your own builder. You can still use trades to do the job. All being relative is comparable houses. So buying a 1100 sq ft house compared to building a 2500 sq ft house doesn't work. It has to be similar size housing. So if you are buying or building a 1500 sq ft is cheaper to build. As long as you dint go nuts with upgrades

Everyone seems to ask "Where?" Well what would the per foot costs be for a 1200 sq ft house say in the Lompoc or Temecula Area?
