To all the SoCal newcomers, or those contemplating moving here, save yourself (and us) some time by doing the following:

If you have a COMMUTE question, don't bother asking, the answer is that it WILL SUCK. It doesn't matter where you live in SoCal, a commute is not going to work. So quit asking! We have the worst traffic in the entire nation, yet everyday we get umpteen posts about commute questions!

Just know that it won't work! Don't do it! You must live close to your work if you plan on moving here and actually want to enjoy your time here.

- unless you live near your job or
- unless you work from home or
- unless you shift your hours like 6-230 or
- unless you reverse commute (drive against traffic) or
- unless you use a vanpool or carpool and drive in the carpool lanes or
- unless you live and work near convenient mass transit or
- unless you can slug

If someone works from home they shouldn't be posting a commute question anyway . Even with shifting the hours, traffic can still be unpredictable. I've been in traffic at 11pm and 5am. Reverse commutes are even unreliable. Been there, done that. Vanpools and carpools are great, but often times the carpool lane is at a dead stop also, during rush hour. I agree about the mass transit. Why don't more people use it though?

Don't know what the slug thing is.

Too inconvenient; Time/Cost trade offs aren't worth it.

i agree. i took the la metro during my last visit and it's just not extensive/reliable enough of a network to depend on. although i have heard that la is investing more money (idk where it's coming from) to develop it.
on a sidenote: i felt kind of unsafe riding the la metro.

Personally I love the "where is the best beach town to live in for $600 a month?" or "can you tell me where to buy foreclosures for 10K?"

Spoken like someone who never tried to commute to Manhattan to work.
