"Because republican business interests love cheap labor and democrats love poor people whose votes they can buy with entitlement programs and the promise of citizenship down the road" This is true but the support of the press for the democrats love of poor people who's votes they can buy compounds the problem(by providing false information to the comon majority) and is destroying the ability of the economy to generate enough taxes to provide the entitlements, which is why the state is needing to cut these. Taxing church properties will not help "Better yet, they should tax the churches and make them pay property, income taxes, etc. Just look at all of the valuable real estate in posh areas that the mormon and catholic churches own. that would pay for a lot of middle class services" actually religious groups provide much more added value in services provided as well as eliminating demands on the community( think schools and hospitals) then real estate taxes would provide in revenue

i think breaking this down to left vs. right is superficial at best. no side is innocent in all of this, but i think what is really wrong is that CA is a victim of its own success. Just as the US was the land of dreams for the downtrodden europeans of the 18th and 19th, CA was the same for americans from the south and the east for the first half of the 20th century. there was so much opportunity and what seemed to be unlimited resources for all willing to make the trek to the west coast to start anew. the basic principle that the US and CA were built on (besides freedom) is growth. unfortunately, growth isn't much of an option for us anymore and now we are feeling the effects of this. for CA and the US as a whole to get through this, we need to continue to grow. but the problem is that we're practically out of space, resources, and money and we've got competition now that didn't exist a generation ago. we brought this on ourselves by being so progressive and growing so quickly. now, growth must come in different forms and from different ideas that probably haven't even been conceived yet. if we can't figure out how to grow, this pain and suffering is going to continue until we regress to "developing nation" status as we're passed up by the rest of the world. it's time for a new revolution. just as the industrial revolution and the information revolution increased the world's production capacity, we need a whole new revolution to pull us out of this mess.

California's greatness as well as the rest of this country was due to natural resources, and superior work ethic, ingenuity. We all know what is happening with the natural resources part, work ethic(entitlements inverse proportions). Maybe the state legislature needs to pull out the Weegie Board,to pull out of the mess.

LMAO. Alot of you people have some impossible ideas. Keep them coming!!! LOL

I have a few:

- Use euthanize dogs and cats to feed prison inmates!!!
- Not only legalize weed, but all drugs! Just charge a huge tax on everything!

On the real though, I wish I could do alot more DMV services online. They should make it much more online friendly. Still charge the same fees, heck add a few dollars for convenience...I'd gladly pay a few extra to avoid the DMV.

How is legalizing cannabis impossible? Its on the ballot this November, all you have to do is vote for it.

Doesn't mean that legalizing it will generate anywhere near the revenue suggested by the supporters. Put me in the very doubtful category, concerning generating much revenue.

The revenue discussion is just a shell to get it legalized.

I don't think legalizing pot is going to save us either, but it is the right thing to do and sure won't hurt us.

The thing that gets to me when reading through this thread and the news reports on the Governors proposal is how everyone points to the kids, how so many children will be hurt. But as hard=assed as it sounds the State isn't asking for these kids, they are not making people have them, they are a result of adult actions and choices. When we help the adults by providing opportunities and services we also help the kids. That should be enough. There should be no direct correlation between a child and a check. NONE. We can't stop people from having kids they can't afford, but we can make it unattractive.
