I am on the east coast now and hear it all the time. Yes, yes, yes they want to be in CA, but dare not admit it. Many are so tired of NY, the lifestyle, and most especially the weather. They know Florida's limitations.

Don't get me started on relatives in Europe. The jealousy is intense. They can only say, yes but we have seasons, so many times with a straight face.

I think people are just tired of California dominating all news converage, tv shows, print media, and overall media. Its like the SEC in football. Fans from all conferences hate the SEC because all the media does it talk about them and neglect great football played in other conferences.

It also differs from state to state. I think New Yorkers and Texans are the only states/city that are jealous of California. The South pretty much hates anyone not from the South. Midwesterners see California as their crazy cousins who left their states and moved West. Pacific Northwest people are the ones that crack me up. They are hipsters who bash California and try to be diferent but ultimately like a hipster they ironically dress, vote, and behave like a Californian.

Asking if people are jealous of California is similar to asking other countries if they are jealous of America.

At one point in history the answer would be a resounding yes for both questions, but that isn't the case anymore. While there are still many people that envy California and America, those numbers have gone down a lot and for good reason. California falls behind a lot of quality of life metrics these days.

They have it backwards: The ones who escaped flyover and headed West are the ones who left their crazy cousins behind.

Spot on for Teabag Nation. But actually, being the state that has it all, we certainly have our share of suitable trailer parks and cheap desert outposts for our far-right friends! Inclusive!

Yes - this response is related to the OP's question.
Hawaii has all that and more, and no one really makes a deal about hating it.
People aren't jealous of California. We are sad that a once great state has gone so far off the rails. We are tired of your insular opinion that when you move out of there you should turn every other state into California. A lot of what's wrong with California is the Nanny mentality that took root in the socialist protests in the 60's. Over-privileged middle children with nothing better to do than muck around with the laws and make everything illegal. It's impossible to do business in California. Taxes, licenses, insurances, rules, regulations, political correctness up the wazoo, and then add the arrogance of Hollyweird's world view being foisted upon people in every TV show (which is why I canceled cable!)

I've always found the "they hate me because they are jealous" line of reasoning to be reminiscent of a rich 13 year old girl in high school who wants to bully everyone into thinking she's got all the answers and the rest of the world is wrong. Wait. That's California!

Unfortunately true. Look at what is said by some of those same people about posters who make valid points. They exhibit the reason why many left.

Are we to believe that Hawaii is vying for the Ultra Conservative
state crown? Have never heard the place sounding like Kansas. Then again, even Wichita has a healthy cable/satellite subscription rate, which indicates they are not so afraid of those awful socialist ideas foisted unto pure innocent minds by Hollyweird, so maybe the Big Island is indeed sliding off the rails. Hard to believe, though, about any place so heavily invested in tourism. Kind of like the heathen CA. So many farners and their strange ways coming and going.
