Really? Ooops, my apologies. I knew you could register a vehicle in another state but it was always my understanding that whatever state you purchased said vehicle in, you still paid applicable sales tax and registration (to you resident state) and could transfer it later. You know much more than I do about this sort of thing but I've never lived anywhere outside of California so I'm absolutely clueless. Sorry.

Car fax says you register an out of state purchase in your State of residence. But we will have to check with the dealer on how they will do the sales tax, because rules vary. Will contact them tomorrow on that.

I do know the purchase price was 13K higher here for the same model in CA.

That's what I thought, too. Like I said, I can't compare it to other states. I only know the way things are here in California and this state wants to keep every dime they can right here. Example of it is buying something from another state and not having to pay sales tax ... months later, you receive a letter from the franchise tax board saying that "you purchased so and so from such and such and you owe us sales tax on that item" True. They want every dime due to them. It's utterly ridiculous.

Yeah. So we are buying in CA, so I have concerns that I will end up paying sales tax in BOTH states. I need to dig into this.

I'd suggest finding a dealer in/near Warren Michigan (near the plant).
Fly in there and look over your truck before you sign or pay anything. Really.

As to the cross state paperwork aspect... just an administarative hiccup.
Expect to be required to pay the MI (or CA) excise tax but then to have that credited when you get to NV.

Then drive the new truck to Indiana MapLink and buy/receive the 5er at the factory.
And look over your rig before you sign or pay anything. Really.
Maybe even watch it as some of the final work is getting done.

I'd also suggest planning a few 'break in' trips (2000mi?) with just the truck before you hook up the load.
If the Truck package includes any aftermarket installed items (brakes, coolers, etc) stay close until all is right.

I don't understand why we would buy in Michigan.... in the middle of winter....

Certainly would not pick up a 5th wheel in the snow.

I'm all about a good deal, but sometimes the action is not worth a few thousand. Driving, hotels, crazy logistics.... I can't see how that would work for us. What am i not getting?

I have never towed a travel trailer but have pulled a bigger skid steer with a similar pickup when I done construction.

I used to tent camp 40 years ago, am way to delicate for that now.

No way would I want to tow that close to my max weight with a gasser. You have to also consider how much your truck weighs when it's loaded with you, the wife, the dog, everything in the back and a full tank of gas. According to my owners manual, my max trailer weight is 9100 pounds and the combined max gross weight is 15,000 pounds. But that's based on a 5900 pound truck. In reality, my truck fully loaded with everything weighs about 6700 pounds. And that's before the hitch and tongue weight of the trailer. So my actual max trailer weight is about 1000 less than the advertised 9100 pounds, because the limiting factor is the 15,000 pound combined max gross weight. Most truck dealers and a lot of RV dealers won't tell you that you have to look at a number of different weights to determine if you're within load limits. Those are truck weight, including hitch weight and tongue weight, axle weight of each truck axle, trailer weight and max combined vehicle weight (truck and trailer combined weight).

I insure where garaged (as I have for 50 yrs as per the instruction of my carriers).

FT RV'rs (or other travelers) don't change coverage every day / State when they make a move.

I'm still on the fence, but HI sales tax is low in this case at 4.675%, at least compared to CA, our initial home base, and NV where we plan to move when we do buy.

Be careful with the Montana LLC scam. A lot of states are going after those who go that route. California is one of them.

Yeah, that's what I have been reading, they have actually made it a felony.
