From what I have seen lately, and it has changed over the years, there are people trying to live in the parking lot. I read one article where the people even had chickens. Many bad stories about RVers, mostly in rundown RVs, dumping their trash and tanks (poop one too) onto the parking lot - they were doing this in Tucson when we lived there in the mid-90s, thus it was shutdown to RVers at that time. Also, with smaller parking lots, it makes it difficult to get in and out as if they are staying overnight, they are still there at 10:00 AM.

This really is not the blame of the cities, it is a few RVers that spoil it for everyone. We never stayed in the parking lot, but walked far away from RVers that we saw sitting there. Now, there is the other end of the spectrum where they driving a $250,000 motorhome and towing a vehicle behind, but they generally stay clear of the Wal-Mart population by parking off to the side, although they sometimes leave the motorhome and take off in the towed vehicle for hours. Overnight to get some rest? Yeah, not so much the way I have seen it.

Wish VFWs had something like that. I have a lifetime membership. Even would pay $10 for a hook up electricity only for the a/c with a promise to go in the VFW to buy a meal or beer.

Our local VFW had RV sites, but the county came and took their lake front property in exchange for a decrepit city building.

but...
You can join Elks (some of their facilities have RV sites)

We haven't taken our motorhome on the road for several years, but years ago we sometimes were allowed to park overnight at some:
American Legion
VFW
DAV
Moose Lodge
Casino parking lot
some church parking lot
rest areas on interstate
some 24 hour restaurants
truck stops
Call ahead or ask inside for permission.

Here in Tucson, I see some RVs in the parking lot of the east side Walmart at some times of year, but not now in the summer heat. Afternoon temps have been above 105F/40C for most of the past few weeks. Early morning lows (4-6 am) drop down to about 78F/25C, not enough to cool off the inside of an RV without the AC running. No hookups for an RV in the store parking lot means no AC. No wonder there were no RVs in the Walmart lot when I pedaled my bicycle by there at 4:15 this morning, starting out a pre-sunrise bike ride (to avoid the heat).

Probably a fellow Idaho State Univ grad (Pocatello) ---where I got my degree.

On the complete opposite note:

I'm currently on the road for a short trip and stayed at a Georgia "RV resort" type place (via my Passport America members half price $20/night), and I couldn't believe some of the beautiful humongous rigs retirees are driving nowadays while towing beautiful high end Jeep Wranglers. If you looked at that, you'd think our economy was doing outstanding ---always wonder where these folks got the money for these rigs ---and how they afford the lifestyle. Not jealous as I'm happy w/ my small trailer, but intrigued.

Here in North Idaho, the Walmart doesn't allow it.

The original idea was that vacationers could spend one night safely and they would come and shop in the store and spend a bit of money.

The Walmart in Bend, Oregon, which allowed it, ended up with a permanent homeless camp in their parking lot. Derelict trailers and blue tarp tents, complete with trash dumped on the ground. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that it involved a bit of shoplifting, too.

Another case of a few ruining it for the many, but you can't blame Walmart for not wanting the homeless camping in their parking lot.

We get players cards at the casinos. Sometimes when we got lucky on the slots, video poker usually, or playing Texas Hold'em, the casino would comp us a week at a time in their RV Park. One of our favorites is Avi Casino & Resort on the Colorado River. I fished in the river & caught Striped Bass & catfish. I usually released them. We have had some great times...
