From my understanding it is not legal. It is decriminalized meaning if you keep it pretty discreet and don't cause problems the fuzz will leave you alone.
Possession of marijuana is still a criminal offense in Canada, however there are exceptions for medical prescriptions. There's been discussion in parliament about decriminalization but it is on the back burner...
The law against pot in Ontario is currently in legal limbo. Despite this, the police continue to charge people with possession until they are told otherwise.
All the above is true. Coming to Canada doesn't give you a free ticket to smoke pot anywhere, and don't think about confiscating it. You will be charged, and sent to jail! Pronto!
Folks, this is not the Netherlands here in Canada. It is still not ok to smoke pot driving down the road, or even sitting on the side of the road with a joint in your fingers. If you are caught, you will be prosecuted, no doubt!!! Keep those dubies and joints hidden.
It is true that it is still a criminal offence here. How you will be punished is based on the amount you have and what area of the country you are in. A small amount for personal use might get you a ticket (similar to jay walking) in Vancouver and or you may get a criminal record in Montreal.
Don't get caught smoking a doobie only for the cops to find you with a bag full of it in your pocket. It's called going to court, and then perhaps jail.

This post made me laugh, sorry.
Don't be so harsh, you won't be prosecuted for smoking a joint. A lot of police officers wouldn't bother you if you were smoking it on the street.
It wiould have been legalized if our gutless government wasn't so anxious to give in to George Dubya Bush and his War on Drugs.
LMAO....nothing like letting the US do your dirty work with that Pot Lord in Vancouver, eh?
Oh, the uproar that he's going to a US jail! I hear he "took the deal" to save his friends though. What a great guy.
If your country actually had the cojones to enforce their own laws (or actually decide what their laws are) this wouldn't even be an issue.
You're right on one thing though. There is nothing in Canadian law that demonstrates any sort of decision one way or another. It's time to look in the mirror and take responsibility for this, as the independent, proud nation I know you are.
