There are a lot of things that go with that, chiefly some loss of sovereignty. The biggest reason the crossing from Canada to the US has become more difficult is, the US believes rightly or wrongly, that Canada is soft on and harbours terrorists. A loosening of restrictions would mean Canada following the US dictates on who may or may not be a terrorist. The same would apply to many other issues. By virtue of being so much larger than Canada, the American standards would always apply.
The EU also involves the ceding of some sovereign rights, although to a lesser extent due the the closer balance of population in individual countries and the much higher number of countries involved. The Europeans were well aware of this when they began to form the EU. As well as being an economic union, it was intended to put a halt to near unending war on the European Continent.
