There are so many great Canadian women in song. When I think about it & start listing them off I'm amazed at the range of talent - K.D.Lang, Alanis Morrisette, Joni Mitchell, Chantal Kreviazuk, Jann Arden, Nelly Furtado, Diana Krall, Holly Cole, Holly McNarland, Amanda Marshall...& I've probably barely scratched the surface.

All of these fantastic bands combined ALMOST make up for inflicting the rest of the world with Nickelback.

And even though most people associate Neil Young with California, he is Canadian and his music is considered "CanCon".

I looked through this post and, Terrapin, I don't think any Canadians have actually answered your question with respect to the regulations (not exactly 'the law'). In terms of the regulations, a song is qualified as 'Canadian' if at least 2 of the following:
- singer (or band) is Canadian
- lyrics from a Canadian
- music written by a Canadian
- produced by a Canadian

It would probably depend on who is the Producer. Some of Bryan Adams' songs did not qualify as Canadian because the songwriters (music and lyrics) were American and the Producer was Mutt Lange.

If both the music and lyrics were from a Canadian then yes, the song would qualify as Canadian. A song from Bonnie Raitt is an example (can't remember the name of the song).



I'm sure there are many grey areas here. For example, when there is collaboration: such as if half the band is Canadian and half the band is American. Or the definition of Canadian. For example, if someone was born in Canada and moved to the US at say age 10 (don't know of an example of this one?).

Canadians may not want to admit it but these regulations which apply to radio airplay were essentially to protect the creation of new Canadian Singers and Bands from Big Brother the States (ie. to help promote Canadian music).

I believe the regulations state that Canadian radio Stations must play 1/3 Canadian Music (and not all saved for the wee hours of the morning). There has been contraversy over this. But personally I like the regulations. It has helped Canadian Artists and I like to hear Canadian-based singers and bands as much as I like to hear US-based and UK-based. The other day, I looked at my favourite Albums and roughly 1/3 was Canadian, 1/3 was US and 1/3 was UK. However, I believe most Canadians would have less than 1/3 of their favourite music collection being Canadian (maybe 20% to 30% - although I have no stats to back that up with...). I'm not saying that makes people 'Un-Canadian' just because they like more US Singers/ Bands, we have to remember that the US has 10x more people than Canada so there is naturally more music going to be created in the US.
