I've heard about the law in Canada that says a certain percentage of radio airplay has to be "Canadian music"? I'm really curious what that means given the nature of music today.
Is a band is formed in Canada and moves to the U.S. is it still Canadian? If an artist is born in Canada but makes it big in America? What about a Canadian singer whose songwriters are Americans, or an American singer or band with Canadian songwriters?
A lot of my favorite bands and artists could be defined as Canadian like Shania Twain, Celine Dion, Terri Clark, Emerson Drive, Avril Lavigne and Nickelback. Emerson Drive especially is underrated....they are a very amazing band with some great songs.
I don't know what other people think but I think that any band that starts in Canada and goes to the States is still a Canadian band!Bryan Adams is from my hometown(Vancouver), but lives in Switzerland but I still consider him to be a Canadian artist. Every time I hear a Bachman-Turner-Overdrive or Loverboy or April Wine song, I go thats Canadian music!! LOL =o)
This thread reminds me of the old SCTV skit where they created "bob and doug mckenzie" just to comply with the canadian content law for the show because it was filmed in canada.
My fave canadian singers for the record are gordon lightfoot (isn't he canadian?) and The Rankin family.
Rik Emmett, from the band Triumph, still plays here and there. As for Canadian music, play Gordon Lightfoot, that's as Canadian as it gets. Or Stompin' Tom Connors.
I'll second Anne Murray! Love her
Rankin Family is awesome
