Depending on the location.
My friend in Toronto pays $200-300 a month for a VW Jetta, my other friend in San Fransico pays $80 a month. Another person I know pays $300 for half a year ($50 a month). But i heard auto insurance is new Jersy would be more close to Toronto.

Furniture in Canada costs more than in the US. Just by visiting ikea.com and ikea.ca and you will realize. The same booshelf that is selling for $69 in the US is selling for $99 in Canada.

Should just make a sticky in this Canada forum saying "WARNING: Everything is more expensive in Canada. In some cases, by more than double.. In other cases, more than 5x".

For a 2003 Mustang GT, I pay 260.00/Month full coverage. For an Audi S5 (ithink it is) one of my friends in California pays 620.00/Year. To add insult to injury, gas is also much more expensive in Canada, as well as parts, etc. Long story short, a car in Canada, especially if financed, can end up costing you the same as your rent.. or way more!

Everything IS more expensive, but tax is only a small part of the reason. Lack of competition and economies of scale is the culprit.

To make things worse, employers don't offer competitive salary, especially to immigrants, even though they know these candidates are well-qualified.

Yes Toronto's public transit system is pathetic compared to Washington DC which has a lower population. DC's metro has some problems but is clean, functional, modern (hello magnetic tap cards not tokens -- it's 2010) and runs until 3 AM on the weekends to accomodate the nightlife.

I have 15 years of driving experience and no tickets on my driving record and drive a small inexpensive car (Civic) and pay 105 per month here in Kitchener-Waterloo Ontario.

In the US I paid 61 dollars per month in the Boston area and 72 in the Washington DC area.

Car insurance is definitely a lot more expensive in Canada with Ontario and BC being the most expensive provinces, more specifically the Lower Mainland in BC (Vancouver) and the GTA in Ontario (Toronto)
