lists are lists... they make people happy I see ironicaly that the places I went for my masters (GWU) is 95th on your top 100 list there, which I find surprising...
name recognition is a bit over-rated... I've met some people who graduated from these upper echelon places but couldn't figure out how to get out of a paper bag...

Trust me I know, I hear the Harvard and MIT card played pretty often here. Either way, these lists do influence the way people think and its never bad for "business" if a school is ranked in the Top100 of whatever.
Nice showing UofT. Too bad I went to #8, #18 and #73. I would have liked to have seen more Canadian Unis make the grade, Australia with a smaller population had 5 Unis. Canada onlyu had 4 in the top 100.

The key problem with these rankings are that they are always made by an anglophone country, with an Anglo-centric way of thinking of what is better and what is worth, which inevitably gives English speaking countries a huge advantage. I'd be interested in seeing a ranking a different one instead.
such rankings are undoubtedly inflated for English speaking universities simply because academic papers written in English are way more widely cited, or get published by reputable (English) journals.
If a very high quality paper is written in French, or Japanese, it will draw less attention that it deserves.
These rankings are not unbiased reflections of how "good" these universities are for sure.
