I have heard from a few Canadian friends that this is bothersome, since Canada is part of America as well. Do you find this offensive at all?

Canada is part of the continent of North America and not part of the USA.
And i've never heard of anyone being offended by the term America.

I think you've been given a bit of subtle Canadian wit by your Canadian friends..

I've socialized with Canadians who didn't seem to have an issue with the name 'America' being applied to the United States. Of course, being Canadian they were probably too polite to raise their objections.
Whenever these Canadians themselves referred to the people from the U.S., they used the word 'Yankees' instead of 'Americans'. They were supprised to hear that many citizens of the United States might object to being referred to as Yankees.

As an explanation, most Canadians (at least all the ones I know) do not realise the regional limitations of the term "Yankee" - they see it as simply a friendly slang world for "American" - just as "Canuck" covers all Canadians. No offence intended - honestly!

Heh. I think Canadians all mostly call you Americans too. It's much easier to say Americans (or Murkins or Yanks) than it is to say United Statesians. What else could you call yourselves anyways that isn't going to be a long mouthfull of syllables? I don't think Canadians care what Americans call themselves as long as they aren't calling themselves God or Rulers of the Universe.
I've seen lots of southern Americans refer to Canada as Canukistan and Canadians as Canukistanis or Kanooks when they think they're being cute while trying to be insulting so I have no qualms about calling them Yanks in return.
