we are the second largest Country in the and the U.S. has over 300 million so 70 million would be nothing and Edmonton, Calgary, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, all of Ontario and Qubec outside of major cities like Toronto, Montreal and Quebec city would grow since Toronto and Montreal are both very expensive to live in and more people would make it the costs higher...

also the Yukon and NWT will gain more people and force new Roads and Railways lines to be built to get stuff shipped up North and reduce the costs and also bring Canada closer together since the North will not be as cut off from the major cities and new freeways means no more Ice Roads.

We would have to build up infastucture since the north is cut off quite a bit in some areas and very remote and well we are talking about building through some very tough terrain and it will be a massive project but create lots of jobs and with 100 million we could have enough people to be able to pull it off.

Take the airports for example. Canadian government considers it as some sort of toll booth. I built it it is time for you to pay. It charges increasingly high fees of all kinds as revenue, without considering the consequences, taking it for granted people will have to suck it up anyway. The American airports on the other hand, instead of charging higher fees, choose to free the market and lower the fees, so that it is more affordable for everyone to fly. They even smartly expanded border airports to lure more customers from Canada, successfully. It is really very different ways of doing business, very typical Canadian vs American way.

Other products as well. It is quite normal for American online stores to offer free shipping from $4 light bulbs to $1000 furniture. Canadian retailers? Addition to charge high price (since you have no choice), the also charge exorbitant shipping, believing the more I charge, the more money I make. Usually in the US if spent enough amount of money ($50 for example), shipping is most likely free country wide. I don't see that in Canada even if you purchase a $1000 couch.

Since I moved to Canada, my online shopping activity probably dropped by 70%, because costs+shipping can be ridiculous. Do the retailers end up making more money? I don't know. I buy from the US, and if shipping to Canada is expensive, I ship to friends there and bring it back when I can.
First off dude, the states has a much larger population, it's gonna be cheaper for them to fly, you can't fill ten percent of a 747 and still have it fly. Our subsidies for airlines in rural areas is a necessity if we were to have balanced population growth.

Second paying more for what are basically chinese goods is not a bad thing, when you start talking about the balance of trade. The states itself would benefit greatly if stuff from china wasn't so cheap.

Great points! Additionally the same people complaining about jobs being shipped overseas (China, India, Mexico, etc...) are doing the same with their dollars by buying cheap goods made with cheap labor.

I don't see why smaller population necessarily cause higher government imposed costs.
I was not complaining about the costs charged by airlines, but our government charges very high airport regulatory costs. Speaking of population, you don't need to compare with the US. Compared with much smaller European countries then. We are still very expensive.

I took a one way flight from Munich to Berlin for under CAD$60 all-in, try that between Toronto and Montreal.

It is absurb to blame Chinese cheap labour cost for our lost job. These people should receive more education in economics.

But You also need to remember that Canadians pay significantly more money on gas then Americans. All the while Alberta itself has more oil deposits then all Saudi Arabia. Canada itself is estimated to support the whole world on oil for over 100+ years. Yet Canadians still pay more for oil while America mostly has Canadian oil and Americans pay less.

Another example of this would be the Alcohol industry. Molson Canadian is 50% cheaper for the same beer in the States then it is Canada.

It's the Government, Not the lower population. Go tell that to Switzerland that low population means higher taxes and cost of goods. It's Socialism. And the Cattle population of the United Empire Loyalists err I mean Canadians. At least half a million of the French in Quebec are standing against the Canadian Government right now. One of these provinces has guts finally, I never thought it would be the French. And the Canadian Government passes bill 78 to take away freedom of speech and rights to protest and expression because they don't like people who disagree with what they do. Canada is turning into China and Russia. And Canada is already a Police State.

Sometimes I can't believe people in the US are trying to dodge the IRS when the Sales taxes and income taxes are so incredibly low. They wouldn't last 2 days in Canadia.

I am with you. lower population is just a lame excuse for high prices.

The Canadians are charged more for the same products primarily because of one reason: the seller knows Canadians will simply suck it up as they are used to it.

Has little to do with costs. If consumers are willing to pay more, why bother make production cost effectively anyway?

At least China gets things done. When they want to build a subway, it gets completed in 5 years. When we do, we spend 5 years talking about it and another 10 years building it.

I never thought the Canadian Government would pass a Bill taking away rights to speech and expression. This country has really gone to hell.

This is the first time I fully support the French. It's not really my concern though, I'll be living in Washington state soon.

With half a million people rioting and protesting, Expect Quebec to leave soon. The West is pretty bent on Seceding as well. Ontario is going to go back to being a British Territory if they don't stop all this nonsense.
