Here's a big one. In Canada the on on the right is called a yam. In fact, many restaurants give you the option of having "yam fries." The one on the left is called a sweet potato. In the USA, it's the complete opposite!
The racist crap that I get hit with almost instantaneously is more OVERT than covert; Canadians say more blatant, stupid racist things to my face and I want to hit them with my car more. Not more than New Mexico - but the question was "overall."

We've had quite a few threads about sweet potatoes and yams here. What you buy in the grocery stores in Canada and the US are sweet potatoes, not yams. It doesn't matter whether the flesh in the inside is orange or creamish, they are both sweet potatoes, just like you can get red regular potatoes and also blue. The confusion lies in how the USDA labels sweet potatoes. I have used both and I have also seen both the orange sweet potatoes and the creamish sweet potatoes labelled as such, as well as having seen one or the other variety labelled 'yams.'
But few North Americans have eaten real yams. They would not likely be seen in an normal grocery store here - not sure if they would make it to ethnic stores. An actual yam has a skin that is almost like bark. From the outside, the difference would be immediately clear.
