I spent 6 months in Europe right after college...stayed in Youth Hostiles and toured various countries, including England, France, Germany, Poland, Amsterdam
And at one of the first Hostiles we stayed at, we were warned to tell people we were from Canada, NOT the USA...as most Europeans disliked USA citizens...they were right

OMG. This is scary. It's the second time in as many weeks that I've agreed with bott.
Don't want this to become a point of contention, but I, too, dislike ice cold drinks unless I'm outdoors for hours on a stinking hot day. I try to drink about a gallon of water daily, and I much prefer it at room temperature, as I do most other beverages.
I never understood the habit of drinking ice cold water/soft drink, even in the winter. It is really more of an American thing. In Asia, we even heat the milk before drinking it, and it took my mother many days to get used to the fact that I eat cereal with cold milk from the fridge. In Europe, restaurants don't usually serve ice cold drinks either.
There is nothing wrong with drinking ice cold water (except that it makes you fat), but it is disgusting for some people to act like this is the only correct way of doing things and anything different is just wrong or weird. Americans should really get a reality check and realize that it is not either American way or the wrong way. America is only a small part of the world nowadays.
Sounds like fun -- Canadian style. Bring on the breadcrusts!
no, it is not Canadian style. Most of the world doesn't really drink ice cold water every day. Even in hot countries like Thailand, they will serve you something warm or even hot.

I don't get that connection. a) Water is a zero calorie beverage. b) bringing cold water to body temperature would actually increase caloric expenditure causing a deficit, making you lose weight.

It is a common misunderstanding. "Even if you drink 10 glasses of 8-ounces ice cold water throughout the day you’ll burn 80 calories, not bad, but if you think that 1 pound of fat is equal to 3,500 calories.... "
And it is not just calories. Your body may tend to preserve more fat with the new need to burn the imaginary calories, and you end up getting fat.

Hmm. That must be how Venus on the half shell maintains that girlish figure. Tepid water and Tim Hortons doughnuts.

What? This makes no sense at all. Ice water contains imaginary calories?
