I mean that kind of brutality is pretty commonplace in China and places like that where people are immigrating to Canada, but it can't explain the fact that some of the recent cases have been done by born-and-bred Canadians.

I can't tell you why, I don't think it's something special about Canada, maybe it's just that we're dealing with such a small statistical sample, evil killers, that through shear chance we're bound to wind up with a random crop of murders every now and then.
Not too long ago, a man and a woman were shot dead in a sushi restaurant in Burnaby. The killer had earlier sent his landlord to the hospital with a gunshot wound. Another nut case, it seems.

For the violent cases you won't know about them until they hit the headlines, unless you were at the wrong place at the wrong time. The one to watch out and to keep out of the way, is cops chasing bad guy with at least 16 cruisers and one helicopter in tow like this one here.
