Down here in the US the employment situation is rough. Like many other people my age, I got suckered in to the whole college scam. Y'know, the one where 50% of graduates are un- or under-employed. It doesn't help that many experienced-hire jobs have tons of competition from people who got laid off after the global meltdown, and that less-experienced hire jobs still require internship experience, and even internships require experience... blah. I'm having a rough time finding any sort of gainful employment, let alone employment that's relevant to my major. I'm not gonna stop hunting, but I would not be shocked if I somehow graduated college without a single internship under my belt.
How is the employment situation up in the great white north? I've heard it's a lot better, particularly in the middle provinces where oil exploration has increased drastically. I have Canadian citizenship so I'm assuming it'd actually be rather easy for me to get a job with a Canadian firm.
I'd be particularly interested in hearing from other Americans who went up North for better prospects.
I don't know anything about the IT market but with Canadian citizenship, it seems it would be relatively simple to search the job openings in your field by province and see what interests you and apply. If you have trouble getting your foot in the door in the bigger oil fields of Sask and Alberta, and don't mind suffering in really cold weather, Virden, Manitoba has an oil boom as well and apparently a labour shortage. Virden labour shortage blamed on oil boom - Manitoba - CBC News Whether that includes a shortage in the IT field I don't know.

I was hoping someone would get back to you.
BC lost 20,300 jobs in October. AB lost some jobs but still hiring I heard.

So you're still in school. Don't know how this info will be relevant to you. Anyways fwiiw, this online Career Fair for the OIL+Gas Services was over, but "You can still log in to the Fair to learn about the companies, download brochures and see the jobs that were posted." I live in Toronto, Toronto has the best job market for IT jobs (AFAIK), Winter is known to be the busiest hiring time for IT jobs, and summer the slowest, perhaps other IT markets are similar I don't know

I've actually heard Vancouver's got a big shortage of IT people right now because of all of the expansions and hiring the local IT sector's been doing this year. Of course, people do complain that the industry doesn't pay enough for the local costs, but it's still a good place to a get a job in that field.
