The term faubourg is used here and there but it is similar to the use of stuff like "Ye Olde Merrye Towne Mews" in English.
Suburbs in modern French are known as "banlieues". In France this is a loaded negative term that often refers to housing projects often populated by immigrants on the outskirts of the cities.
In Quebec, banlieue is roughly synonymous with the word suburb in American English, and any negative connotations would be mostly related to suburbs being boring or bland.
