what about canada joining the european union? In many ways, i think canada is almost like a european country, certainly moreso than the united states is. If canada was part of the eu it would be part of a more competitive market; if it were part of the us it would also give them that benefit but at a huge cost to their sovereignty.
The problem with canada joining into an american economic union would be that it would have to give up many of its regulations, for example how canada bans bovine growth hormone, they would have to start allowing american milk into the country. It would also lead to the possibility that the united states might annex canada politically some time in the future.
I believe our cellphone bills are among the most expensive, if not the most expensive, in the world. There's another Canadian monopoly for you.
Really? Because mine's only $55/month and I have all the bells & whistles. Call & complain. They'll deal with it and give you a better plan. Unless you're a crappy customer who doesn't pay on time, of course.
It comes down to 3 factors; size (huge), population (small) and climate (COLD!). Combining the 3 has to make everything more expensive, especially our roads/railway infrastructure, and that in turn affects everything else. Should have said 4; add stupidly expensive government and ....... there you go. Quite simple, actually.

You need to educate yourself on what people in other countries pay. You can buy a throwaway phone in the U.S. with a Canada/U.S. calling plan, bring it back to Canada, and pay less for cellular through the American company than you would from a domestic carrier.
Or cellular and internet access rates are among the highest in the world, and that is the direct result of industry collusion between carriers and the government allowing the communications oligarchy to exist in the first place.
because most goods are sold to outside countries to resell back to us in another form. we literally have nothing to offer ourselves and rely on other outside sources to refine and produce our good for us.
I have not checked but I think Canadian club whiskey is cheaper in New Hampshire, US state run liquor stores than in Canada. Perhaps the government keeps the prices high to "discourage" drinking.

They do. The Liquor Control Board of Ontario calls this "social responsibility". Of course, the rest of Ontario simply calls it "straight-up greed".
These are old cites. By their dates, Canadians (Ontarians? Albertans? Newfoundlanders? Who?) have no problem with the status quo. As per Constitution s. 92, liquor sales are provincial responsibility. One cannot say, "The Canadian government restricts alcohol sales."
Many Canadians would like to see their liquor sales privatized. We have that in Alberta, but we cannot sell beer and wine in convenience stores. Quebec can. Ontario only sells liquor through government-sanctioned stores, and beer and wine through private stores (yes, "The Beer Store" is a private enterprise). But Ontario cannot sell beer and wine in convenience stores. To the best of my knowledge, PEI (unlike Alberta and Ontario) will not allow the sale of cold beer; it must be sold warm. In short, in Canada, alcohol sales are regulated by province, not federally.
