Easy. A lot of snow! A few look like they may have been filmed in the mid-west. I have recognized the same office building interiors in two or three movies. How about the background? Look like sets because no boats move on the water while we're watching the actor/actress in the condo scenes!

Scott Pilgrim was actually SET in Toronto, so it's not a huge surprise that they would film it there.

Toronto's streetcar tracks are a dead giveaway in downtown scenes. You can see them in the "Suits" TV show, and in movies such as "Hairspray."

Rural areas and small towns are a little more difficult, unless you know the landmarks. The Spielberg miniseries "Into the West" (from about 2005) is set in 1880s Utah, but in the background of many shots is Alberta's Mount Yamnuska, which has a very distinctive shape. Similarly, the Lethbridge, Alberta train trestle--one of the largest such trestles in the world--can be spotted in 1976's "Silver Streak," with Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor.

Thinking of "Silver Streak," those who know the architecture of Toronto's Union Station will notice that it stands in for the Los Angeles train station, the Kansas City train station, and the Chicago train station, in the movie.

I just about memorized the background scenes in "Stargate" and "the Highlander". The fights in the sulfur loading piers were otherworldly. The TV show "Haven" is filmed in Lunenburg, NS.

The easiest way to tell if a show is filmed in Canada is to watch for the made in Canada label during the end credits.

Things look different. Plants. Buildings. Street signs. The actors,....I usually recognize as Canadians from other Canadian produced TV and movies.

Made- for-TV movies on Lifetime and Hallmark Channels in the US are filmed in either California or Canada. See a palm tree in the background - made in California
Don't see a palm tree in the background - made in Canada

Sorry incorrect. These are in Vancouver. I'm not suggesting that TV shows and films would try and use these as substitutes for California since these are a different variety of palm, but just to point out, palm trees do exist in Canada.
